It is about 1-4 players being sent in to "Extinct" a colony of aliens by using drills to destroy their hives. You are given a loadout of your choosing by being able to select a class, pistol, ammo, team support, strike package and equalizer. They added an armory system where players are able to spend teeth to unlock upgrades that are permanent. In the game you earn cash for killing aliens and completing hives. The cash you receive can be used to buy weapons and any of your abilities. You can upgrade your abilities in game by using skill points. Skill points are earned through completing challenges and hives. You are given drill to use to destroy each hive and guard it to the best of your ability. Since the release of Call of Duty Ghosts, there has been three DLCs (Onslaught, Devastation and Invasion) released that offer new maps and features for extinction mode. The extinction maps featured in these DLCs are Nightfall, Mayday and Awakening. This makes the total amount of COD Ghosts Extinction maps in the game 4 because of the starting map Point of Contact.
