The father of a 7-year-old boy, saved when he was nearly strangled by a roll-up building gate in Brooklyn, is officially thanking the New York City Fire Department. Mendy Gottlieb nearly died in May when he became stuck in a roll-up gate on Stillman Street in Williamsburg. Members of Engine 211, Ladder 119 and Rescue Company basically held him so he wouldn't be choked, eventually freeing him. The old gate has been replaced by a brand-new one, a much safer one. In this deeply religious community, neighbors said it was a mix of dedication and divine intervention that kept this family whole. The fire department members who rescued Mendy received special plaques.
